Four years on, the process of review and revision was set in motion by ALGAO East with a successful regional conference at Belstead House in Ipswich. At the core of the regional research framework is the idea that research is fundamental to the practice of archaeology, however and wherever it is pursued. Knowledge-based policies are vital to promote understanding and conservation of the historic environment. The conference papers covered specific research projects, threat-led fieldwork, developing approaches to research and management of the coastal zone, rural and urban environments. Lively discussions embraced both the archaeological findings and the challenges posed by the changing political and technological environment in which archaeologists operate. A strategic vision for the future began to emerge, and will be outlined in due course by ALGAO East.
A research framework should be dynamic, and review an ongoing process benefiting from feedback. With this in mind, some of the conference papers have been released here.
